UnitedHealthcare Military & Veterans, a UnitedHealthcare business, provides health-care services to active duty military, retirees, and their families. In partnership with the Department of Defense, UnitedHealthcare provides health-care services to more than 2.9 million beneficiaries as the TRICARE Managed Care Support Contractor for the TRICARE West Region.
The TRICARE West Region includes: Alaska; Arizona; California; Colorado; Hawaii; Idaho; Iowa (excluding the Rock Island Arsenal area); Kansas; Minnesota; Missouri (excluding the St. Louis area); Montana; Nebraska; Nevada; New Mexico; North Dakota; Oregon; South Dakota; portions of Texas (including El Paso); Utah; Washington; and Wyoming.
United Healthcare Military & Veterans began serving the TRICARE West Region on April 1, 2013. In order to address difficulties that some beneficiaries and providers have experienced relating to an increase in the volume and delays in processing referral and care authorizations, TRICARE Management Activity is temporarily waiving the requirement for authorization of care in order to expedite service in its West Region. Effective immediately, no authorization will be required for TRICARE covered benefits that would otherwise require a referral or authorization. This waiver applies ONLY to services provided as a result of a referral issued from April 1 through June 18, 2013, and does not apply to beneficiaries using TRICARE Standard; under TRICARE Standard, patients do not need referrals for covered specialty care.
